If you have an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, you may discover that your touchscreen becomes unresponsive over time. This issue is commonly known as ‘touch disease’ and it’s happening to iPhones across the world. The problem, it seems, is a faulty chip and the iPhone’s width and size.

Signs of Demise

The first sign that your iPhone touchscreen may stop working is the status bar. The bar will become grey and unresponsive at some point and some bars may start to flicker. Eventually the whole touchscreen will become unresponsive. Because the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are both built on a touchscreen concept, an unresponsive touchscreen would render any phone useless.

The Issue

The problem with the current iPhone 6 and 6 Plus seems to be the controller chips. Some iPhone experts have recently commented that the touchscreen problem is widespread enough to impact all iPhones in this line. A few commenters have gone far enough to say that all iPhone 6 and 6 Plus phones will be impacted by the touchscreen issue at some point.

If your phone has not yet had a touchscreen problem, many believe that it will have this problem in the near future. There is a fix for this problem, but it’s one that many iPhone users will have to have corrected properly. This isn’t a fix that can be done by anyone within an Apple store for the most part.

The Fix

In order to fix the faulty chips, the chips have to be carefully removed and sautered back into the iPhone mainframe. This is tedious work that also has to be done precisely. If the work is not done with precision, iPhones could be damaged beyond repair.

The experts that can replace and fix these chips do not work at regular Apple stores, which means that anyone with an iPhone that does not currently work would have to find an expert to fix the phone - not an easy task.

The other option is that Apple would have to somehow recall all iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models. Again, this would not be easy to do. However, Apple is coming out with a newer iPhone version this year (at some point - the date has not yet been released), and many are hoping that the newer version of the iPhone will not have the same issue.

Apple could also offer rebates to current iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users on a new phone, but this concept has not yet been offered or spoken of by Apple.

Apple Response

Apple Store employees do not seem to be surprised by this issue, and many iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users have been told that the issue is known. However, Apple has not yet commented on this problem or offered up any solutions - or information about how the issue will be fixed on the newest iPhone.

Hopefully Apple will do something to replace the faulty chips but what the solution will be is currently unknown. The company has not commented on this problem. Stay tuned for updates.
