The iPod is the de facto MP3 player for most people on the market today. If you know that you want an iPod, however, your buying decision does not stop there. There are number of different models of the iPod, each one geared towards a different type of user.

Whether you are a heavy music listener, or you only listen to music when you are exercising, there is an iPod suited just for you. It is worth looking at all the different types of iPod models do decide which one is the best one for your needs.

IPod Classic

For users who have a lot of music and want to carry all of their music with them all the time, the iPod classic is the iPod for the job. The iPod classic, which comes in dark gray or silver, can hold 160 GB of music. That is more than enough for most users. However, unlike the other iPod models, it does not run iOS. Instead, it runs on a hard disk.

This unfortunately makes the device more fragile, as hard drives are not very durable. Hard drives also are not as fast as SSD drives for loading data such as music quickly. While you may sacrifice some convenience and speed for the power and size of the iPod classic, if you have a lot of music, it is worth it to splurge on it.

IPod Touch

For most users, the iPod Touch is more than enough. The iPod Touch comes in 8 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB sizes. While you may not be able to take a DJ-sized library of music around with you everywhere you go, it is more than enough to keep many playlists on. In addition, the iPod Touch runs iOS. This is the same operating system as is on the iPhone. So, the iPod Touch can be thought of as an iPhone without the phone capabilities.

IPod Nano

If your biggest desire in an iPod is increased portability, then the iPod nano is the right one for you. The iPod nano is very small with a touch screen, stand, unlike the iPod classic, does not have any moving parts inside it. This makes it much more durable for moving around very quickly when exercising. The iPod nano comes in 8 GB and 16 GB sizes, so while this is fine for people who just want to carry around a few playlists, it will not be able hold all of your music if you have any significant amount of music on your computer.

Also note: Apple sells an iPod Shuffle, which cannot be recommended for all but the lightest uses. It stores 2 GB or 4 GB, and does not have any type of display. While it is fine for playing music on shuffle all the time, it is worth spending a bit more money on the iPod Nano if you want an ultra portable MP3 player.

There is an iPod for everyone, and it is worth exploring all the possibilities before you make a buying decision. The iPod Touch, for most users, will suffice. Users on the extreme sides of the spectrum (uses need lots of space, or uses who need extra portability) will lean towards the iPod classic for the iPod nano, respectively.
