Looking for a smartphone and tablet in one? While some scoff at the giant smartphone look, others drool. Enter the Nokia Lumia 1520, Windows-based “phablet.” It offers a 6-inch HD display in a compact 0.34 inch size, along with some features from the PureView camera technology from the Lumia 1020.

This offers you the capability to take high-res images anywhere.

The screen is much bigger than your typical Windows phone. So much bigger, you will see an additional column of live tiles on the home screen! Microsoft prepped for this hig-res display, offering 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, with revamped software and a quad-core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM.

The Camera

As previously mentioned, it offers Nokia's PureView camera, bringing you a 20-megapixel sensor. Not as great as the 1020, but better than other smartphones on the market. Enjoy optical image stabilization, Carl Zeiss optics, dual-LED flash, and backside-illuminated sensor.

When you take a picture, a low-resolution image is made available immediately for sharing on social media like Facebook or Instagram (the low-res is more ideal for this use), while the 20MP image is stored on the 1520 for future use. If you'd like, export it to SkyDrive or AT&T Locker directly from the 1520!

Make a slideshow from all of your photos stored on the device easily with the new Storyteller feature. This unique service relies on the location data associated with each photo, displaying the pictures on a map. It even takes into consideration the time the photos were taken!

Want to alter the focus after you've taken the picture? Not a problem! Refocus any picture easily, as long as you've chosen the “Refocusing” option prior to taking the picture. It relies on software rather than optics to get the job done, and Nokia wants to bring this feature to the 1020 at some point down the road.

What about video? Capture your moments in 1080p video at 30 frames per second. The four microphones will assure you are getting the sound just right, too!

Additional Information

So, does that sharp, crisp picture suck the battery life right out of the device? According to Nokia, the battery (which is non-removable, by the way) holds 3,400 milliamp-hours. This will allow you to watch just under 11 hours of video from the device before it dies. Even though it contains a nice 32GB of storage, there is a microSD slot to add more.

You can choose a Lumia 1520 with either a red, white, black, or yellow polycarbonate back. Nokia is offering new accessories specifically for this device, like a “Treasure Tag” that goes on your keychain. This tag serves to alert you when your phone travels more than 50 feet away from the tag.

Prices aren't yet available, but the company has said that there will be a 1320 offered as well for less. It will have the same sized display, but 1,280x720 resolution and a 5MP camera rather than the PureView. There is no set release date, either.
