Technology Articles > Software > Communications > Apple’s iCloud: What’s It About?

Apple has done a great job marketing it. Television ads all over the world showcase it. Tech blogs from here to the other end of the world talk about it. But, what is the iCloud and what does it do? When it comes to explaining exactly what the iCloud is and why people need it, Apple’s famed marketing team has fallen short.

If you’re wondering what iCloud is, where it came from, or why you might want to use it, you’re not alone. Plenty of people are perplexed when it comes to Apple’s iCloud technology. I’m here to clear up all of that confusion by putting iCloud in simple and straightforward terms. Then, you can decide whether or not Apple’s iCloud is something that you can’t live without.

The iCloud Is…

Being an avid Apple fan, I’ve learned that Apple aims to do one thing: make life easier for Apple users. Most Apple devices do, in fact, make life simpler. The iCloud is no exception to this hard and fast Apple rule. Apple’s iCloud aims to synch all of your music, files, photos, and ebook purchases, so that you never have to look for anything. You can store this information away from a hard-wired infrastructure. Once documents are placed in the cloud, you never have to worry about them again.

You can think of the iCloud like you think of other cloud programs such as DropBox. Only, you don’t have to place all of your Apple items in the iCloud – your devices will do this for you. Whenever you want to listen to a song or find a document, the Apple devices that you own will share information, so that everything you need is at your fingertips around the clock. The iCloud is a fairly genius invention, isn’t it? Well, that’s why so many people are talking about Apple’s iCloud so much.

iCloud and Music

The iCloud really shines when it comes to music. Any music that you’ve purchased through iTunes will be automatically stored in the cloud. Further, any iTunes music that you have stored on one Apple device will be automatically transferred to all other Apple devices you own. So, you never have to manually transfer tunes from one device to the next.

If you don’t purchase your music through iTunes, Apple can help you there too. You can purchase iTunes Match for around $20 per year, and Apple will automatically provide you with copies of those ripped songs. No hassle, no fuss, just your music when you want it all the time – that’s the Apple way of making life easier.

Do You Need It?

If you don’t already own an Apple device, do you need one? You do if you want to check out iCloud and all it has to offer. Otherwise, there are other services out there that offer cloud storage and synching. If Apple’s iCloud sounds like something you’d like to experience, give it a whirl. Thousands of people (maybe millions) can’t be wrong on this one!
